The purpose of the fifth character changed over the years the C900 was built. The B, C, D applications you are referencing were only used in 1986, after that the fifth character can be any letter A-Z (including B, C and D) and is designated as "For internal use only" (in my Saab 900 factory manual section "0, Tech. data 1981-92"). So there's no telling what "L" would designate in 1989 but in 1984 and '85 a fifth character "L" meant it was a "GL" model.
