Sorry to hear about the issues with the car. Unfortunately, there are a lot of very unscrupulous people/dealers selling the older Saabs who know all too well the problems with the car and just go ahead and sell it anyway as a fully functional vehicle. I am curious as to where the dealer is located and if it was on EBay? My wife and I went for a test drive in a C900 I was looking at while we were in NY that was listed on that site. Seller always has a number of Saab's for sale. Needless to say we passed on the car. Totally different in person then what was represented in the listing. Don't need to mention the dealer name if you do not want but just a location if you could.
If you purchased on EBay, you do have some recourse. Hopefully you will get some of the funds back.
As far as repairs go, your indie mechanic is correct. Remanufactured trans is likely needed plus all the things that go along with it while you are in there. Really need to take a look at the big picture and put feelings aside. While you did just spend close to 4K on the car, might be better to stop there then being in to a car for 7-8K that is only worth the original 3K. Many of us on this forum have been down this road so you are not alone.
Good luck!
