should you have lots of yoga practice in your background then you can leave the knee bolster on. If I were you I'd perform the full troubleshooting (with the engine runnin one dude runs a DMM thing on APC ECU pins while another one is examining each APC component, see below), but if you like cutting corners then you'd better start with the knock sensor: crank it up to ~2500 RPM and hammer it a little right on the thing (you can use some wrench or a screwdriver as a extension-transmission stick since it's hard to get to the knock sensor with a hammer) and see whether the APC solenoid ticking goes changed in any way. Then you can check the pressure sensor using some syringe (a T-joint with some extra tubing and pressure gauge will be a helping hand there) plugged into the vacuum-boost hose going to cabin: with the engine revving at ~3000 revolutions per minute you should definitely notice some changes in APC solenoid ticking after you boost it to 0.5-0,7 bar.
As a wild guess I'd bet you've got some wiring issue with the knock sensor.
