Four *inches*?
Some causes for the overheating:
1. Thermostat stuck shut or not opening all the way.
Test this by touching the upper radiator hose when the engine is hot. If hose is hot, thermostat is open.
2. Radiator blocked, exterior (air flow).
Fins full of bugs or debris?
3. Radiator fins corroded away (no fins = poor cooling)
See story below.
4. Radiator plugged (interior)
5. Blocked cooling passages (engine, hoses, etc.)
Flush the cooling system.
Story: I have a 1989 that had hot running issues. Final solution was a new radiator. The rad fins were corroded so badly they started flaking off the core during radiator removal. When tapped on the ground, old fins rained down. The radiator didn't look too bad in place but it's hard to get a good look at it without removing fans. Got a Nissens radiator from one of the site sponsors. Great product.
