It's not a bearing. Posted by Cmyles [Email] (#1126) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Cmyles) on Sun, 24 May 2015 14:12:10 In Reply to: Re: nope, those were US dollars, john_gonzo, Sun, 24 May 2015 12:47:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
John,
What you have there is exactly what Landjet said it was, a piece of the stupid D clip (which measures exactly 0.078" diameter) that intends to secure the 1-2 shift fork onto it's shaft. It was part of the 1993 redesign. Prior to '93 the fork moved on it's shaft and worked just fine. In '93 the shaft had a shallow groove cut around it and bushings were installed in the case so that the shaft could slide forward and backward, then the fork was pinned to the shaft through a slot in the fork using the clip. That made the entire shaft and fork slide as a unit during 1-2 shifts. I have no idea why Saab thought that would be an improvement.
Two things always happen; 1)Relative movement of the pin and shaft cause the edges of the groove on the shaft to curl up and 2) the pin breaks off and you find the piece on the magnet. None of that seems to be a real problem since the curled edges of the groove prevent the fork from sliding along the shaft which is what the pin is for anyway.
So don't lose any sleep over that detail, I haven't see it be a problem yet. The 175,000 miles suggests that it is in the range when the pinion bearings need replacement. Be listening for that whine and be pro-active. If it's shifting and running well then you have a good, presumably virgin five speed there which will be easy and cheap (as they go) to re-bearing. That puts you way ahead of anyone who drove their C900 until the five speed blew up and is now looking for a good replacement. They get scarcer every day.
