I should have mentioned the piece has black oxide surface finish. Or something dark like it.
Landjet, one end is indeed broken with a jagged section extending across the diameter. There is even a slight wear pattern across the end parallel with the raised jagged center. The wear pattern cuts into the piece maybe 1/8 diameter. (The whole end reminds me of a tree that has been wedged and dropped with a chainsaw.) The other end is square with a slight burr on one side (factory shear?). Also, good to hear the bearings are a larger diameter.
Cmyles, that explanation painted a great picture of past, present and future. The confirmation puts my mind at ease. Sadly, I do know that pinion bearing noise from a late-youth squandering of a 1987 5-speed. I'm trying to make up for that now by doing things the right way on this '93.
And Siegfried, no worries. The relief I feel now is only magnified by your early assessment!
Good sirs, I appreciate the detailed information. Thanks to all of you for the help.
