vacuum advance, ported vacuum question

While setting the timing, I noticed on my 1990Turbo that the vacuum advance on the distributor is connected to ported vacuum on the top of the throttle body. Now, a common way to gain a little more performance on an older 70's american ride was to take the ported vacuum advance and connect it to a direct manifold vacuum port, and then adjust static advance accordingly. Would this give any gains in performance & driveablility on these cars too? ...it's been a while since I've messed with non-electronic controlled ignition!
