Quiet day. Surprised nobody else replied.
It's a little different situation than good, ol' American iron (of which i have fond memories): the servo on the side of the distributor is actually a vacuum retard - as boost increases, you need to retard the timing.
The port that's almost directly above the throttle plate is the right one. It could be put on a port further behind the throttle plate, but there won't be much difference in performance, and the spot it's in probably gives the servo faster response to fluctuating pressures.
In fairness, there are some custom distributors that have been talked about on the site which are set up for a a range of advance and retard, but they're not all that common.
