Thanks for all the input. With a new morning and clear head I the found problem. It had a bad ground. One of the main grounding points to the frame near the radiator was not tightened. It caused all kinds of weird electrical problems.
As far as the oil leaks which are frustrating. The one at the firewall appears to be the engine / transmission seal. I spent extra diligence using the recommended loctite 518 anaerobic sealant for that problem area of the gasket - darn. I wonder if I can use some sealant around the edge to seal it. Also the area around the flywheel seems to be leaking. I replaced the rear main using the plumbing pipe cap installation method. It is frustrating to go to this effort to seal it up and still have leaks.
One other thing I noticed is when I press the accelerator it stumbles before it accelerates. It does have a check engine light on which may be related. The exhaust sensor connector is corroded; I tried to clean it however not sure if it is getting a good connection. It is an 1988, is it possible to read the codes? If so where is the connector to check it?
