I forget what year they changed the location of the connector.
However, thinking about it a bit more, '88 turbos have the LH 2.2 engine management system and won't have any codes. It's more simple-minded than the LH 2.4 and 2.4.2 in later 900s.
That front ground can be troublesome: On mine, half of the wires going to the radiator ground were corroded off the terminal. Had to do a whole lot of splices.
