heater core freakout!

My c900, 1988 non-turbo (which was garaged unused for three months until today, while I was in SE Asia) apparently blew out the heater core (probably original) once it got fully warmed up. Before putting the car into storage, the engine was running seriously hot so I just ordered a new thermostat, figuring that would be a good starting point. But now I'd guess that the heater core was failing (I could sometimes smell glycol) by degrees and it was probably impossible for the overall cooling system to pressurize properly.
Anyway, temp gauge was high just now but not worryingly so, and suddenly my sandaled (!) feet were drenched by nearly boiling coolant, maybe dumping two quarts on the DS floor in 30 sec's. No burns, fortunately, but a truly unpleasant surprise. I have the Bentley manual and it covers removing/replacing the heater core and controls. Seems straightforward enough, but will be a PITA, no doubt.
Firstly, has someone out there actually done this job and who might have pointers to offer? And secondly, any ideas on where to look for a replacement heater core?
Meanwhile, I'll just run the heater intake hose back onto the heater outlet hose fitting the thereby bypassing the entire unit. (Or I'll rig some other field expedient fix. Anybody think that's not a good idea for a temporary repair while looking for parts? Car is obviously unusable, otherwise.
Your feedback much appreciate, as always. Happy to be here on SAABnet once again.
