I don't know who Gently is, but there is a significant difference between the core and HCV. It's easy enough to look to see if the HCV is still in one piece or not, but I have never, ever heard of any heater core catastrophically failing - slow leak, maybe, but sudden dump of a half gallon of coolant on an all-metal core? Seems really unlikely. If you've already had the HCV go brittle and crack once, it seems pretty likely that's what happened again.
There are lots of threads on TSN about replacing the HCV - it's an unpleasant on your back cramped into the footwell job no matter how you slice it.
