Thanks much, Justin & Padgett for the speedy response.. Does the mixing valve assembly require removing the heater core?
Gently said flat out that the coolant dump onto the driver's feet indicates a failed heater core, not differentiating, evidently, the core from the valving.
Actually, shortly after I acquired this car three years ago or thereabouts, both of the nipples —upper and lower— where the heater hoses, inlet and outlet, are clamped to the valve assembly failed spectacularly and sequentially two days apart. I sawed the remainder down a bit and managed to re-attached the hose with two clamps on each, and they haven't broken off ever since.
I just bough a heater core/valve assembly on eBay for $52. including shipping. The OP said the heater core was perfect but the valve assembly had been epoxied back together once and might night be useable. Is there a source somewhere fro just the valve assembly?
We have another two months of fair weather here in the Chicago exurbs so I can get by with defroster or caring heat until I get this all figured out.
