I agree, both of mine also got new radiators a few years ago. It makes sense to go over the whole cooling system in 1 go, replacing hoses also, at least the ones aging the most... tstat is a wear item, the fan switch less so... all of these are cheap parts so worth doing for the piece of mind! Btw, I'm running the 82 degree tstat and fan switch in both of mine, and I'm very much in a northern climate and I've observed no downsides. I suspect the difference between 82 and 89 is not huge.
The coolant info from years back is anecdotal, but anecdotal from a tech who was monitoring many of these cars so had lots of data. My 1993 2.1L had all the same symptoms of the cases he referred to. The hg in those cars was inclined to be eaten away in a few places as there was less margin than in the older 2.0L design...
