I'm sure a blocked cat would really heat up, but it also might heat up if the problems are elsewhere and your engine is just running like crap. Anyway, you could probably detect an abnormal temperature (not sure what it is supposed to be normally?) using an infrared thermometer or maybe even a classic thermometer so that you wouldn't have to mess with disconnecting the cat. Just a thought. Personally, I've never had a cat go bad in any of my cars (with the exception of me catching a guy with an 18V sawzall trying to steal the cat off my Jeep).
