That's... worrisome, Vern. As it happens, I'm almost home with the R&R. The fail-point was met last weekend when I attempted to signal for a left turn. The '89 must have thought I wanted to pull a u-turn, because the stalk suddenly dislodged and drooped from the housing. My headlights were erratic and, of course, I had no ability to signal turns. Fortunately it wasn't far from my destination that night and I made it home safely the next (sunlit) day.
I have since removed the turn stalk/wiper assembly, it seems that the pivot pin in the aluminum (?) housing had sheared off that evening, but perhaps there were earlier symptoms that I didn't connect with the ultimate failure. Specifically, the signals worked fine, but wouldn't cancel upon completion of a turn. I thought that That may have been a cue that the white plastic boss that extends to trigger cancellation of signal had broken-off, but maybe it was a sign of stalk displacement? I dunno, except thet the boss was found to be intact when I disassembled the unit.
I cobbled various parts from both the '88 and '89 stalk assemblies and have at least regain driveability. That is, I have dimm-able headlights and the turning lamps at least light upon command-- but, regrettably, they don't blink and that kinda sucks.
RS has been of considerable help to me, both for useful guidance and moral support in a few phone calls. My working hypothesis is that, during disintegration of the stalk housing and consequent light show owing to momentary short circuits, I may have fried the flasher relay. FWIW, the hazard lights work and even blink.
I'm going to test the feeds and output from the flasher relay on Sunday. Fortunately (?) I had to remove the knee bolster in order to reattach the cruise control wiring harness so I have ready access to the relay.
I'll keep everyone posted.
