I'm looking for some insight on wiring harnesses for converting a non-turbo to turbo. And having been on the BB for a number of years I have a feeling this question is easily with-in your wheelhouse, knowing how many LH conversions you've done.
Here's the back story...
I'm helping my dad convert his 92' 900 s (slush-o-matic) to a turbo with a 5 speed. The donor car is a 93' 900 Turbo (5 speed) and was in a nasty front-end collision on the drivers side. Originally the plan was to transplant the fuse box, harness, drive train, etc. over to the 4 door... but the impact was so forceful that it crumpled the outer and inner fenders, crimping, pinning and cutting the main engine harness. So the only way to extract the drive train was to cut the front end of the car apart, sacrificing the wiring harness along the way.
I've been out of the modifying Saab's game for awhile and after getting married and having kids my vault of USEFUL Saab information has been drained. And I'm having trouble remembering the variants of LH systems and which years are specific to what. So please forgive the lack of terminology, or my just sounding like an idiot. Anyway, now I need to find a donor harness. I have access to some parts cars, but haven't been able to make the trip to see whats available (there are some turbos but I still don't have specifics). So the questions are:
- Do I need the full fuse box and engine harness and associated turbo system wiring (over boost, etc.)?
- Do I need to find a harness from a 93', or would a 91-92 work?
- Another option is a friend of mine might be parting out his 90' turbo convertible (rust), will that work (I seem to recall 90' being a different variant, maybe I'm wrong)
In a nut shell, we're looking to build a nice stock 900 4 door turbo that we can tune slightly with the old school methods... no crazy modifications like FMIC, Ball bearing turbo, or T5. Oh, and the 4 door has been sitting for over a dozen years so basically everything is going to be touched or gone through in the re-commissioning process. I say this to give the understanding that fishing wires won't be that big of a deal with this project because almost everything that is an obstacle with this kind of a job is out of the way already.
Anyway any assistance will be greatly appreciated. FWIW, I've done numerous searches on the BB to do the leg work, but I just can't seem to come across the definitive post or series of posts that help. Also, I've really enjoyed reading about the T5 build you've done on your 85 SPG (on SC). I have an 86 SPG that I plan to convert over someday, but that's on the back burner.
Thanks Again,
Fish
