Government jobs eh? We should ask the government of Sweden to resurrect Saab. That would be a job. I am open to talking to vendors about stuff - as long as they're open to talking with me! A lot of folks basically yell at me to get out of their shop when I ask them about stuff like this, which is why I've not even asked lately.
Hex stock is something I've thought about, but as long as I can get one of my colleagues to waterjet the blank hex shapes from bar stock in exchange for beer, it reduces my time on the lathe considerably - down to just finish boring and threading. The grain in hex stock may also be structurally worse, but that's basically handwaving and speculation on my part.
