Hi all,
was doing some engine work over the last while which included installing a different gearbox (old one needs a rebuild) and installing a ported head, among many other things...
was getting ready to lift the engine back in the car and gave the crank pulley a push and immediately noticed some end float. I put the engine back down and with my dial indicator measured my end play at:
.016" / .406mm
What gives? I rebuilt this engine approximately 35000km ago and was VERY diligent and meticulous. The parts were carefully balanced and measured and then written down; I used new bearings (of course) and verified perfect oil clearances throughout. Written on my sheets the end float when NEW was at the high end of the tolerance at .012"/.300mm
can someone perhaps measure thiers to make me feel better about this? the factory manual states end play should not exceed .011" or .28mm BUT there were certainly other parts that seemed out of spec in there (I recall wide ring gaps even though bores measured correct)
I believe the bearings were the typical Glyco bearings common place today...I wished Clevite's were available. Im hoping that the end float will not cause me issue if I continue to use this engine, as its used HARD and has quite a high output.
