My project 89 900S is coming along (working on welding in a new rear shock mount at the moment), and I'm trying to plan for the next phase of work. There's a pretty significant leak from the front main seal (firewall end). I had hopes that this might be due to a blocked PCV, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I suppose lack of use might be contributing and that it might lessen somewhat once I start driving it, but in the end it will need to be replaced barring a miracle.

I'm thinking that ripping into that end of the engine is going to involve lots of secondary jobs that require access: rebushing the alternator, replacing the water pump, belts, AC tensioner, etc. As far as the primary job, my questions are:

- Any preferred brand for the seal itself? Any to avoid? SKF, Elring, and Corteco seem to be readily available.

- Aside from the main seal and the oil pump seal, is it advisable to replace the harmonic balancer/crank pulley at the same time? My car is fairly low mileage (just over 100k), but at 30 years old how likely is that part to be approaching failure?

- How about the crankshaft position sensor? Do these fail fairly regularly? Mine seems fine, but again, given the access issues, is it better to just replace it while I'm in there?

- Any super secret insider tips on doing the job? I'll be working from the top (no lift). I've got a 4ft steel cheater bar for my 1/2" breaker bar that I figure should give enough leverage to get the crank bolt out.
