I've got a sacrificial shallow 30mm socket on the way - I'll cut as needed. As far as locking the engine, I read one account that suggested 4th gear and handbrake on would be sufficient to hold things in place, but failing that I'll be rigging up something like what you show with the prybar, as I don't have a ring gear lying around to cut up at the moment.
