I have an '87, by 2001 the dash was a real mess from cracking, despite my best attempts at drilling holes, trying fillers, etc. I tried one of the $100 dash caps, was very unhappy with how it looked, felt, and fit. I replaced it with a pristine, mint-condition used dash from an '85 that had lived its life in a no-direct sun, cool, humid climate. It started developing cracks after 4-5 years, and by 2009 was a mess. This time I sent my old dash to a guy up in WA, "Dashboard Restorations USA", he stripped and recovered it with some sort of shrink vinyl material, total cost was $550, and it took a while (months?) before I received it back. It looks & feels very close to OEM, can only tell the difference in a side-by-side comparison. Most importantly, it is still crack and blemish-free after 11+ years, looks as good as when I installed it. The car is parked outside, no special precautions taken against sun, heat, or cold.
The bad news is I don't think that company still exists. But you might try "Just Dashes" or search for other car restoration folks that can recover the dash with more modern materials. Trying to stick with the original Saab material will not work.
