I'm got some similar problem to Thomas on a 1993 900TC.
Some fuel odor when topped off for several years. Sadly this now complicated by an EVAP system fail on Calif SMOG.
I replaced to the fuel pump last year and pretty sure the o-ring is seated and the lock ring is tight. Guessing a fuel tank crack from a previous post. Tanks look hard to get and a lot of the parts are NLA so wanted to approach it carefully!
My question is on the EVAP hose routing on the Conv. Does it come from the gas filler neck through the rollover valve inside the rear fender and then inside the car? The EPC is very unclear. I was going to use that valves connections as a test port for a smoke machine and pressure test so I can do the tank/filler separately to the evap components. The $70 smoke machines on the ebay are calibrated for 1 PSI/28in water column - which seems ok.
In case it helps anyone else Calif SMOG is 0.5-1 PSI applied and you are allowed a max of 0.4PSI/11 in WC of leakdown over 2 minutes. Obviously easier to pass on a near empty tank!
I was just going to use some clear hose in a U with water to measure the leakdown rate.
From what the tech told me it was a very marginal fail, so not a gross leak and probably harder to find.
Thanks all.
