Have you had time to investigate further?
I've had pressure plate straps on non- Saabs come apart and make a mess.
The straps hold the pressure plate friction surface
to the outer bell, and sometimes when they break,
they escape the bell and start hitting the bellhousing.
It always happens at sustained high rpms.
That would explain the noise, and also the smell, if
they were hitting the plastic cover.
There's also always vibration, as the straps keep
the friction plate centered. When they go,
the plate is free to fall off- centered in the
housing.
