Thank you so much for your very detailed response!
From the electrical schematics in my bentley manual, in the '87 model the signal to the tach is branched between the tach and the computer- meaning it doesn't need to travel through the tach before it reaches the computer. If that were not the case, I'd have issues with the car running properly if the tach wasn't working, correct?- and the car runs fine even if the tach is not on. I could be wrong, but I've spent some time looking over the electrical schematics- I know they changed pretty considerably year by year.
I had redone and more firmly secured the connection of the Hall sensor at the distributor- that didn't seem to help the stalling. Ignition coil was good, all grounds fine.
I've done more tests and more thoroughly inspected everything- here's what I've found:
-plugged PCV valve
-vacuum leak to the charcoal canister
-high resistance from the idle control valve to the computer- should be 40ohms, its 60.
-loose ground on the ignition control module! there was a sheet metal screw through the inner fender that was loose
I'm waiting on a new PCV valve before I start it up again, but I will post an update to see if the loose ground was what was causing my problems. Fingers crossed.
