I rebuilt my system in 2018 on my 85SPG with a rebuilt seiko compressor from eeuroparts (back when you could still get them)flushed out the evaporator and condenser, installed all new hoses, new defrost switch, drier, and r134a. It works decently but definitely not as well as a modern car AC. From what I've read one of the big reasons is the condenser. You need a parallel flow condenser for 134a to work well. Since the condensers on these cars were designed for r12 and are not parallel flow the system will likely never be as nice as a modern car.
I'd love to replace both my condenser and compressor with something brand new, a parallel flow condenser and a brand new compressor built for 134a. If anyone knows of new alternatives that work with our cars or modifications that can be done to use them that would be excellent.
When it is near 100 degrees my compressor gets noisy. (I live in North Florida and 100 degree days are common) At idle when it is that hot the system can't keep up, but once you start driving it is fine. Below 90 degrees no problems really at all, aside from the drag on the car from the AC.
