A buddy blew his engine by overheating. It was a 91 non turbo. He had a Saab dealer mechanic install another engine at his home on a weekend. The mechanic had done a HG on that engine and he charged a very reasonable amount. My buddy complained to me that his replacement engine didn't seem to quite have the power it had before. And the fuel mileage seemed less. It started and ran and didn't do anything unusual except the apparent slight loss of power. I pulled the cam cover and could see the the cam timing was off a tooth on both cams. Similar to your picture. I reset the cam timing and it ran fine. We never mentioned it to the mechanic.
