Tightening belts: how to get at the mounting bolt?

It should be easy to tighten the belts. It's a no-brainer: just loosen the mounting bolt, tighten the nut on the screw, tighten the bolt. Theory is wonderful. All I've accomplished is to drop my socket wrench into a place that I won't be able to reach until I jack the car up. So, I ask you:

How do YOU go about tightening the belts? What tools do you use? There must be a way other than going to a commercial garage. Many thanks in advance.
