Hello,
As far as 1986 900's always having stumble problem, not true. The stock LH fuel injection system works fine. It hates vacuum leaks but if those are taken care of it can be made to purr. Some parts will need to be rebuilt due to new ones being hard to find. The wiring harness's will fall apart that year but have to think at 270k that problem has been taken care of long ago.
As far as putting duel carbs on, there are some obstacles to overcome these days. And I say this as someone that sets up various multi carb vehicles at work more often than most people do these days. Remember carbs are very reliant on engine vacuum. So a tired engine can create some problems. With a duel carb set up they must be synchronized or it will run terrible. Also the ethanol gas we use often means the idle jets need upsized to make up for the ethanol. And remember you will need a different fuel pump set up.
I am pretty sure that they sold carbureted 900's in England in the 80's. Don't know if they were 8 valve or 16 valve. Good Luck, Bernie
