I am far from an expert, but I thought the later models did not have an ignition amp. and that was all in the ECU at the passenger door front pillar.
My 1984 8V many years ago did have an ignition amp and when it failed it was a total no start. A late 80's BMW with LH jetrontic too was a total cutout too when it went the ECU intermittently bad.
It sounds like the next thing would be to try an ECU or perhaps look at the coil primary with a scope when it is happening.
As you probably know there are very few 900's left. I am assuming low 1000's in the US.
