Re: Old style calipers Posted by MC [Email] In Reply to: Re: Old style calipers, PaulS |
We have a collection of early caliper cores now for this reason. maybe a couple dozen or more ? Every single one has a piston or bore defect. Too many years of sitting or negligent hydraulic fluid service flushing.
The pistons will need to be re chromed. The bores will have to be over-sized. This would require customer bore seals as well. Too much time and effort to bespoke these old gals. That's Jag money.
Late style brake Conversion is probably a more reasonable approach when it comes down to it.
The later style rebuilt calipers are getting harder to come by too now.
I have a close friend; we went through about 6 different right-side caliper cores before we found a candidate that would "Leak *less*" for the first couple MM of brake pad lining. Once the piston gets beyond the bore pitting defect it should tend to seal better. In the meantime he diligently checks the brake fluid level and continuously cleans the caliper/wheel area for scrutinized monitoring.
The price to pay for riding a dinosaur.
