Worst case scenario; We are seeing more of this as this issue as these era models starts to fatigue around the body joints: the bonding seal where the sunroof assembly is mounted to the roof begins to separate and allow for seam-seepage. As part of the original design the rain-gutter portion for the sunroof water-channel draining is obtained by a bonding seal between the mounting flange of the sunroof cassette to the inside of the body roof. It has a propensity to separate at the front corners due to the curved angles of the roof/body. The drain-tube and gutter for the sunroof can only support so much volume of water before it finds the closest gap to spill/seep-over into.

The fix is not simple, but an excellent time to renew the headliner fabric; a weather-strip compound is used when refitting the sunroof to the body and a water-tight seal is ensured ... for another ~40 years.
