A couple thoughts from past experiences:
1) CV joint ? I once parted out a car with a failed ring and pinion that turned out to have a CV joint that had failed completely so car wouldn't move, trans was fine. It was an '86 S 5spd. No real noise when releasing clutch in gear, but no movement. Owner was a notorious 'run em till they fail' repeat Saab owner. Unfortunately, I didn't realize until pulling front suspension/axles after car had been stripped.
2) Clutch master? - car would drive normally usually, but occasionally would hesitate before clutch would engage. It was the clutch master which had significant crud build up that occasionally it would return slowly resulting in delayed clutch engagement.
