Hello everyone!
I have a 1992 classic 900 with a 2.1L NA, and I drove it down to central California from the Pacific Northwest early last week without issue. Over the weekend I noticed the engine was weak when cranking and taking longer than normal, especially during the day. Since I currently live less than half a mile from work, I figured it was just that such a short drive wasn't giving the engine enough time to charge the battery back up, so I started taking it on longer drives to see if that would remedy the issue. It kind of did, until today. As a result of whatever this problem is, the following have also occurred in addition to the weak cranking:
-Dash lights are faded and the sound for the turn signal is almost inaudible.
-The ABS light was flashing for a few minutes, then went steady.
-Following the ABS light going steady, the brake fluid light went on. Upon stopping, I checked fluids and everything was still at a normal level.
-Window winding became very weak.
-Driving down California highway 198, which is flat and straight, at a constant speed of roughly 65 MPH earlier this afternoon, there were several instances when the engine would seemingly cut out for a second and then pick back up.
As I said earlier, I did have an issue firing it up over the weekend, and literally all of my lights were on for a couple of miles on that occasion, but I took it out for about 30-40 miles on Sunday afternoon and everything seemed to be functioning normally after that.
I spoke with my dad regarding this earlier, and he knows more about Saabs than anyone I've ever met (certainly more than I do at least), and he has narrowed it down to one of 3 potential issues:
1: The battery is kaput and needs to be replaced. Easy enough.
2: The alternator is kaput and needs to be replaced. More work to do, but not the end of the world.
3: The voltage regulator on the alternator is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced.
Has anyone had something like this happen in the past? What was the culprit for you?
