Here is the latest update for the recent 1984 Saab 900 - Fuel/Temperature Gauge Replacement post.

Changing only one thing at a time ... this morning I gently tighten the two ground nuts on the back of the blue foil for the fuel/temperature combination instrument.

Then I test drove the car for 20 minutes. The temperature gauge did not spike to maximum after about 15 minutes, which is what happened on a test drive last week. Instead the gauge stayed in the green, just slightly above the cold position.

After the test drive, I then immediately checked the resistance of the water temperature sensor. Using the temperature / resistance graph, that I made early this morning ... the coolant temperature was 170 °F. Please see the screenshot attached.

THEREFORE - The problem is not with the coolant system. Instead the problem is with the temperature gauge. For normal operation, the needle should be horizontal. Instead, it now stays at a bit above the cold position, after tightening the ground nuts.

So, there might be three possible solutions, replace the blue foil, replace the fuel/temperature combination instrument, or replace the entire instrument panel with one from E-Bay.

So, far I have been able to locate a new combination instrument (part 8581076). Separately, I have also located a complete instrument panel for a 1987 Non-Turbo 900. I have NOT been able to locate a blue foil (part 8552382).

WHAT DO YOU GUYS SUGGEST AT THIS POINT ?? Will the 1987 instrument panel work in my 1984 900 ? Do you have any suggestions on locating a blue foil, et cetera ?

Thanks very much,
ForzaSaab
