Performancewise, it would make more sense to run 3" all the way to the
cat', then run 2.5 or 2.25" back. The cat' is the dominant element relative to back pressure. They're relatively inexpensive, too. I
bought a 3" from CarSound for $100. For about a $100 more, you can get
a RandomTechnology. The difference between this and running a 3" system
all the way back is very marginal and I doubt that the butt dyno would
even notice the difference. You may want to consider foregoing the
middle resonator - some have even eliminated both the resonator and
rear muffler. I eliminated my resonator and used a very free flowing
Magnaflow - remember most of the sound is attenuated by the turbo. My
set-up isn't loud and is analagous to the early 900's in sound, only
deeper.
