Yes, getting the old one off is the worst part, but as you suggest, it's all for the bin so it's nothing a hacksaw can't handle (except I tried to preserve as much as possible in case the new system wouldn't fit - but it did!). The bolts connecting the rest of the system to the cat/downpipe on my '96 were the only ones that would turn. At worst, I could have done it by simply disconnecting the downpipe at the turbo and jacking up the front of the car if necessary to get enough clearance to remove the system complete with downpipe.
A word of warning: if any of the turbo flange studs come loose when removing the old downpipe, make sure you screw them back in before fitting the new downpipe. If they are allowed to seize in the part-unscrewed position, you will get a leak at the flange and will have a hell of a time fixing it. I had to remove my turbo and have an engineering shop remove the stud. It was easy to avoid, had I known at the time.
