dinty moore is not a phd yet. dinty moore could be a master if he wrote a paper but he doesn't really feel like it would be worth it.
I guessed that airflow was the big issue - especially because I had heard that the main advantages were realised at higher rpms. The biggest thing I didn't know was that the all the intake valves can open at once - I thought that they would alternate. The several smaller holes solution to the packing problem certainly makes sense (remembering cannonball packing problem from Kittel's Solid State Book) - though arranging the pipes in and out of the head seems like a real head scratcher to work out properly.
I've never taken the head off of an engine. I assume that during the compression stroke the piston comes just up to the surface of the engine block? I assume as well that the combustion chamber is machined out of the head, and is hemispherical in a "hemi" engine. What shape is it in a Saab engine (I'm reluctant to take the head off of my 9000 to see it for myself)?
If compression and combustion does in fact occur in the head I'm amazed at the strength of the head gasket. Does coolant flow through the head and the engine block?
