I can't say whether GM is going to ruin the company. At least Saab is still around for that to be a possibility.
As to the 9000 being the last true Saab, that's quite funny, because it's been a long running joke in our local Saab club that the 9000 is NOT a true Saab. This of course, being due to the 9000 having been designed jointly with Alfa and Lancia, and thus dubbed by some the 'Italian' Saab. However, it was designed many years before GM had any stake or say in Saab, so that's something. Many also whine and joke that it's not a true Saab because the engine is in backwards, the ignition key is in the wrong spot, the hood opens backwards, etc, etc..
The death of Saab will be when people stop buying new ones. Seeing how (apparently) a great deal of Saab fans from the 60's/70's/80's see fit to moan and complain about how there aren't any good Saabs anymore, Saab as a company must look to other buyers. I don't ever plan to buy a new car, myself, but you can bet I will surely look to a 9^5 wagon once the prices come down a bit, even though it's not a 'true' Saab.
