I grew up (I'm 28) in a Saab family with Sonetts (II's and III's), 95's and 96's. A good friend of ours had only 99's and 900's (those were too new for us). I've owned a '73 Sonett, '88 900S, and currently a '91 9000T. All real Saabs as far as I'm concerned. Like someone else said-if it's got a Saab badge...and that's the way I feel.
It's all about progress and evolution of a brand. "Your laptop may be nice but the super computer that fills my garage is a 'real' computer" isn't really the way things work. Just because things get fancier and more expensive doesn't make them any less real or true.
Compare a '60's VW Beetle with a new one, same name, same look, probably same argument, but the new one is technologically advanced, way more refined and much more comfortable.
I think the meaning of a "true" Saab would be how much personality the owner associates with their particular car. The product may have lost a bit of uniqueness and gotten watered down a bit with the influx of GM, but I think GM allowed Saab to explore new ideas and gave them a new life with some much needed capital for R&R.
If I remember correctly the ignition key is in the dash on my 9000, just like it is on my Dad's '71 95, so I don't think the key placement is even an issue-so don't start with the key in the center console thing. :)
Cheers and have a good drive!
