I think it depends on how you define it.
The 9000 has an Italian heritage, the later model 900s are based on an Opel chassis and the newest Saabs are some variant on a GM platform.
I've looked at the new Vector and I do get the feeling that some of the Saabishness has been leached out. German made engine, Japanese transmission, no hatch and the trademark GM-Saturn interior. This isn't bashing, these are facts.
GM, perhaps like no other company, knows the car business. At a business level they are selling more Saabs and they are selling them to many customers that have never owned Saabs before. It is the right move.
The issue, for me personally, is that I can connect with a car that is quirky and a bit of a project. I appreciate the un-eveness of older Saabs. Brilliant engines and a climate control system that would never make production at Honda, for example.
As a way to get from point A to point B reliably, the new Saabs are probably the best they have ever been. As a project car or a car outside the mainstream we may have to stick with older models or look elsewhere.
