of you replace the chain frequently you can prolong the life of the sprockets. So at 300 000km say the crank sproket and the upper cam sprockets have just a hint of uniform wear...something you can barely feel with a finger(as do mine), and hte chain pins are still centered in the center if the teeth......you should be able to get away with a chain and tensioner, as that original wear, athough it will continue, will wear at a lesser rate.
However the new chain will not last *as long as the original chain on original sprockets, because eventually the sproket wear will get to the point where it will screw with the cam timing, as the teeth and pins on hte chain will not be centered (and will fluctuate) as the system turns.
quick note: although the crank sprocket is smaller in diameter, the oil coverage is better.
