The current sprockets are harder than the originals, and the chains are longer lived. I'm not sure why you tore into the timing - "just because", because of noise, or the measured extension on the cam chain tensioner. Anyway, there's records of people with the later cars, those with the new design chains and sprockets, pushing 300,000 miles with good (but not heroic) maintenance practices.
There's nothing mysterious about the chains - they fail most often because of wear, plain old wear, from not changing the oil enough or using the wrong oil or oil dillution due to short trips in cold weather. The newer parts are more wear resistant. THe 9-5 has lighter valves with softer springs, and so there's less load on the chains and less wear. The 9-3 SS has roller tappets for even less load on the chains and even less wear (but they compensate by driving the steering pummp off the intake cam and the water pump off the balance chain).
