My '86 has the same problem. And as my mechanic would say, it's normal for the older 9000's to have cooling problems.
But since yours hasn't always done it, I would suggest getting your radiator flushed. When you pull off the line, it's basically doing the same job as the fan. but you can check it by having your car idle, and when the temp goes up a bit, but before the fan goes on high, rev the engine slightly, 2k. and only for a second. if the temp goes down, it could be your radiator. if it doesn't, than check and/or replace your thermostat. Water pumps don't normally just stop pumping, it's mainly a bearing thing on those, the squealing and the like. What could happen is your thermostat might be partially open, when it should be open all the way. when you pull off of the line, your revs rise, forcing water through. That could also account for the leaky hose, the pressure being too much for it. Try those things first, thermostat is a cheap fix, and you can get a radiator flushing kit at any auto store, i don't really know of a good brand.
Hope it helps!
Andrew
