Too pricey, too much work. The rust spots alone would drop it off my list immediately, because you'll never truly be able to get that resolved.

I bought my '93 Aero for $3,250 with 128,000 miles (off this board). No a spec of rust, excellent interior, NEW TRANSMISSION, NEW CLUTCH, NEW WATER PUMP, NEW AC COMPRESSOR, RELATIVE NEW HEAD GASKET, TCS ISSUES DEALT WITH AT DEALER.

Since then, I've done another $5,000 of work on the car, but mind you I wanted my car to be like new afterwards. But like others have said in this string, it's clear this car you've found has not been well cared for. Here are possible problem areas:

-- Transmission and clutch (EXPENSIVE to replace)

-- Timing and balance shaft chains (EXPENSIVE if you have someone else do the work)

-- Head gasket

-- Heater core and blower fan motor

-- Front end stuff (ball joints, tie rod ends, bushings, CV joints, etc.)

-- DI cassette

-- TCS pieces, if a TCS car


The car you've found might not need this stuff now, but if they haven't been done yet, be SURE that you'll eventually have to deal with it -- and not too long from now, with 180K miles on the clock.

Keep looking, and when considering any car, ask for all records, have a reliable SAAB specialist check the car, and have a total budget in mind -- you'll spend far more than the purchase price at the end of the day, after making necessary (and ongoing) repairs.

Great cars, but be picky -- the right car will show up.
