Hmmm... the sizes run from 18 inches to 4 inches... literally! Hehe
I have an 18" Cerwin Vega Stroker subwoofer, that runs at 1600 watts at 4 ohms **RMS**, seriously.
The amp i have to power it right now however, will only run 1200 watts at 4 ohms RMS... ("only") :) I need to get a soundstream VAN GOHN series amp to run the sub perfectly at the 1600... but for now... as you can probably imagine, it's loud enough. Underpowering a speaker is worse for it however than overpowering it... don't ask me why it just is... and it'll blow easier while being underpowered than overpowered... most quality drivers can handle being powered up to 50% over their labled capacity...
anyways... with a 3 inch voice-coil, it's not blowing anytime in the next 100 years... the only thing to ever go wrong on the sub is the surround, which will rip if you somehow manage to get it past the 1.5 inch excusrion limit... that's peak to peak by the way...
check out my website's INTERIOR picture section for photos of the sub and amp... and look at the OLD INTERIOR link to see the sub box being built...
...which by the way, is 6.64 CUBIC feet of space... built and tuned perfectly for the sub to resonate at 35 HZ... BOOM. the downside is, THERE GOES MY TRUNK! But as silly as it looks, I get over 110 db, and the DB drag competition is going to "hear" from me soon.
enough about the sub, there are 6x9's in custom enclosures built onto/into the rear shelf. Boston acoustics 150watt i think, and in the from 4" boston acoustic speakers to replace the stock 4"... They are all run an infinity Kappa 225a amp... which could also power 2 more subs if i had the space!
so... yeah, it sounds good.... but like you said... it is an addiction...
Since i've been well versed in all ascpets of sound, electronics and the physics of it all for my profession... i thought i'd just give it a try in my car and see how it goes. The sub itself is the only thing that is tuned correctly however. In a car situation, you can NEVER have the time alignment right... meaning the time it takes for each speakers output to reash your ears is different, and the reflections caused by the car itself will cause a HUGE reduction in the quality of sound... and thus... go see live music folks... those live sound engineers will give you the best quality sound ever! By the way, i'm a live sound engineer for hire... ;)
so NYsaab, i live in glens falls, NY. where you at?
