Yearly changes? Seasonal changes? "Real" syn (Group IV/PAO) or "fake" syn (Group III/dino)? If you're looking for a no-worries, winter-only oil, I'd go with either a 0W-40 or 5W-40. If you want a single oil for year-round use, then I'm more comfortable with the more robust of the two, which would be the 5W-40. If you're changing at least twice a year, then run 15W-50 or 20W-50 during the warmer half (two-thirds?) & xW-40 during the colder half (one-third?).
PAO syns (Mobil 1/Amsoil) will provide better protection, greater durability & longer life than super-refined dino oils (Castrol, Pennzoil, & just about all the other over-the-counter brands). The super-refined oils are legally allowed to use the syn label, but, considering the cost & performance differences, that's about where the benefits (to the user) end.
I'm currently using M1 5W-40 in my '99 9³ for 10k mi intervals (about 13 to 14 mos) here in N.Colorado (lows around 0°F & highs around 100°F). Last year I used M1 0W-40. The 5k & 9k mi Used Oil Analysis (UOA) looked good, but I hope to see better results with the 5W-40. The absolute best results I've ever seen in a Saab turbo were from zeke's 9000 on M1 15W-50. He runs this oil year-round in MA down to 20°F.
