the few saab mechs i've asked that question to say the 9-5 is a better car than the 9000. the only caveat being that saab installed some oil screen that causes sludge buildup and ruins the engine. if you can verify the car has had regular oil changes, especially with synthetic oil, then you're ok, if the oil changes were with regular oil every 7000-10,000 miles then I guess you have cause for concern. one mech i talked to said he always removes the oil screen to prevent problems. he said part of the problem was they increased the mileage between oil changes without recommending synthetic oil. you should be able to find a write-upon saab recalls for the 9-5, and post to the 9-5 board. the other thing i was told is there's a very inexpensive part that breaks on the AC that IF it goes prior to being replaced, will cause hundreds or more dollars in damage to the AC system. check edmunds online for consumer feedback on the 9-5 for different years. i've been thinking of moving to 9-5 at some point myself, in the wagon version. Aero version pretty much requires premium gas from what i've read, so prepare for the cost if you want the power. transmission is supposed to be very reliable, but i did just see a 200? 9-5 with maybe 56,000 miles (memory) that already had a new trans replaced under warranty, so who knows what went wrong there. good luck...
