I won't go into detail about the common problem areas for 9000s here, since you're probably well-versed in 9000 quirks.

Here are a few things I've gleaned from the 9-5 board regarding what to be wary of in 9-5s:

* Turbos often go bad on earlier production runs. Something to do with poor quality at the turbo supplier
* If DI cassettes fail (and they often do), a person might blithely drive along with one cylinder dumping raw gas into the cat. Good bye cat!
* There's a problem with earlier models where a mixer flap breaks in the HVAC system, leaving one of the dual-zone heater temps at either full cold or full hot. Expensive to fix.
* Various and sundry problems with PCV systems. Conflicting modifications, sometimes and sometimes not performed, can affect oil consumption I believe, and/or cause oil burning.
* Various software updates which can sometimes cause other problems while solving the targeted one.
* Engine comes out the bottom of these cars, if you're ever in that position.
* Aforementioned sludge issues can cause wear of the timing cover, resulting in low or no oil pressure, and in some cases, engine destruction.

Keep in mind that the sludge (and other) issues have contributed to a situation where it's difficult and expensive to find used engines for these cars. Apparently more cars in need than engines to meet the need.

All this is definitely not to steer you away from the 9-5, which is a very nice car indeed.
