How a turbo works, basically: Fresh air pulled in thru the intake, goes thru the air filter, then goes to the compressor side of the turbo, where it is compressed (19psi peak on my car for example).
Then the compressed air is pulled through the intercooler where it is cooled, then through the intake manifold and into the combustion chamber. The compressed and cooled air provides the BOOST feeling as it's combusted with the fuel.
The spent exhaust gases flow out the exhaust manifold into the turbine side of the turbo. The outgoing exhaust gases spin the turbine on their way to the downpipe, this keeps the compressor side of the turbo spinning and compressing air because the two sides of the turbo are connected by a shaft.
There is backpressure created at the turbine side when the exhaust hits the blades/ downpipe, which is why many of us upgrade to a 3" exhaust. hope this helps a little. -AMG
